Dr. Umaru Baba  is the head of Research & Statistics Department at the National Insurance Commission, Abuja. He held various positions of responsibility since the inception of a meritorious service spreading over two decades. An accomplished Financial Statistics specialist, he hails from Yola-North local government of Adamawa State and, holds the degrees of BSc, MSc and PhD in Economics.
Dr. Baba belongs to a number of professional institutes as a fellow or as member including the CISON, in which he served as the pioneer Secretary to the College of Fellows of the then Nigerian Statistical Association (NSA). He is a strategic member of a number of National and Sub-National Technical Committees including, the Economics and Statistics Committee of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI). He also Chaired the Committee for the actualisation of the Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria (CISON) bill to an Act of the National Assembly (NASS) wherein, he led the Committee’s activities that saw to the passage of the bill by the National Assembly and, to its assent by the President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria.
His areas of interest include Microeconometric modeling, Sustainability Science, Green Growth, Risk Management and, Financial Statistics & Analytics. Dr. Umaru Baba was the first Council Member in the tenth Governing Council of the then Nigerian Statistical Association (NSA).
