The CISON is conceptualised as both a learned institute for statistics and a professional community of statisticians that would promote the development of statistical theory and practice in Nigeria. This is because; the institute is expected to sharpen professional education in statistics and, therefore, facilitate the production of statisticians that have specialized knowledge in the production and use of high quality data, necessary for evidence-based decision making and policy design. Also, the institute will bring professionalism to bear in the conduct and practice of statistics in Nigeria, as members would adhere to a code of conduct as enshrined in the Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2022, or any other bye-laws as may be enacted from time to time. Again, members would be in a position to exchange research findings and opinions on latest advancements in statistics. The institute would also, through statistical advocacy, ensure the enthronement of statistical culture in the society. CISON is also expected to publish through electronic and print media, a national journal, bulletins and newsletters as well as host meetings and conferences, all in an effort to disseminate statistical information and create awareness about statistics as a public good.
- To achieve all these, members would have to exert their energy and skills in:
01
Advancing the use of statistics in medical research
02
Analysing socio-economic issues
03
Encouraging and developing statistical computing as a way of enhancing statistical practice.
04
05
Promoting Total Quality Management (TQM) techniques and practices
06
Promoting the correct use and interpretation of statistics by the populace
