Leadership
The structure and governance of CISON shall be as entrenched in the Act and any other Bye-Laws that might be enacted from time to time. The Governing Council shall be the main governance body of the Institute and shall be chaired by the President, who is also the Chairman of Council. The Council shall consist of a total of fifteen persons, who shall either be Fellows or Associate members, appointed, or elected as the case may be. The composition is as follows:

- Minister responsible for Education or his representative;
- Minister responsible for National Planning Commission or his representative;
- Head of Service of the Federation or his representative;
- Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria or his representative;
- Statistician General of the Federation or his representative;
- Chairman, National Population Commission or his representative;
- Eight persons elected by the Institute who must be Chartered members; and
- President and Vice President of the Institute.
In addition to the above, the Registrar is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Head of Administration, as well as Secretary to Council. S/he shall be responsible for the day-to-day running of the Institute.
Furthermore, CISON is organized into Chapters, Sections and Committees with the Governing Council at the apex of the organization. Chapters should be organized in States and the Federal Capital Territory, while Sections should be subject-matter and industry-area interest groups of statistical sub-disciplines. The Committees on the other hand should coordinate meetings, publications, education, career development, and special-interest topics involving statisticians, subject to the approval of Council. Those that would have oversight functions in respect of issues related to chapters, sections and committees shall be appointed by Council from among its members. Consequently, the following are the Areas of Activities/Department
